Ten Things About Carol Welsman

1. How old were you when you first started playing piano and singing?
I was 4 when I started piano. I was singing Oh My Darlin’ Clementine at 1 year old sans lyrics!

2. Who was/is your biggest musical inspiration?
Hard to say, but pianists: Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, singers: Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan

3. Where do you make your home?
We are nomads for the moment, but between Charleston, SC and Toronto

4. Do you have any pets?
Yes, Dolly, an English Cream Golden Retriever

5. What is the best concert/gig you have ever done?
I don’t think I have a best concert, but I can certainly say that the Pops symphony concerts were pretty amazing, being accompanied by so many fabulous musicians. The elegance and harmonic thrill are unmatchable.

6. What is the best concert you have ever attended?
Strangely, I have not attended many concerts, but it’s a toss-up between Ella Fitzgerald and Keith Jarrett live in Toronto.

7. Do you have an all-time favourite song?
I don’t really, but one that stops me in my tracks every time I hear it is “Every Breath You Take” by Sting. A close second is “The Folks Who Live On The Hill”

8. What musician would you still most like to work with?
Yo-Yo Ma

9. If you weren't a musician what would you be?
A linguist, working with people who speak the Latin languages.

10. What is your favourite thing about Vancouver?
I love the fact that the mountains and the ocean are so close, and the views of the channel islands are breathtaking.
