GIVEON- BELOVED

He’s got Frank Sinatra’s phrasing, John Legend’s knack for a great melody, and Adele’s heartbreaking honesty. Even still, Giveon’s sound is distinct & unmistakable.

Following up his 2022 debut album, Giveon has now blessed us with his sophomore album Beloved. And I’ve been playing ‘Rather Be’ for us on the morning show, but there’s a whole album of R&B songs to make you feel all the feelings.

With “Twenties,”  I’ll warn you, it could have you thinking about someone you had vowed to forget. It’s a song about young love and taking too long to realize the relationship is not right. And Giveon says it’s based on a true story from his own life.

Moving on to “I can Tell,” guys, it’s slow & sexy, but it’s also a bop. And if you’re looking for a song that captures his essence, this is the one. And here’s why. He originally wrote it for another artist who didn’t want it because it was “too Giveon.” Luckily, he took it back for himself because it’s one of my personal favourites off the album.

Next, thank goodness for broken hearts, because they give us rich-songs like “Bleeding.” On this one, Giveon’s baritone-vocals ache & plead. And do its lyrics tell a great story? Giveon thinks so. In an interview with Billboard, he suggested they are enough to inspire a screenplay.

And, finally, I’ll leave you with a fun fact. His mother named him Giveon, after a street in his hometown of Long Beach, California. She thought it would be perfect for a son she hoped would grow up to be a giving person. And from the sounds of this album - he is.

Giveon plays Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on October 2nd. Tickets on sale now.
